Jion-ji Temple

This temple, established in 824, still boasts high visitation among tourists and religious crowds alike. The 13 distinct towers in the temple grounds commemorate the Chinese monk Genjo Sanzo (Xuanzang in Chinese), known to the world through the Chinese novel “Journey to the West” . Some of his remains are housed within this temple.
